14 years of game dev

It feels like just yesterday I got my first job in game dev back in Australia, but it’s been about 14 years! I feel like I’ve done a little bit of everything, and was very fortunate to have gotten to grow as an SE on the job while working with different languages, frameworks, and teams. I guess the main phases of the last 14 years have been:

Hosting

I’ve tried quite a few blogging platforms over the years: Wordpress, Squarespace, even Ghost at some point, I think.

I opted for self-hosting years ago, always on S3, first via Octopress and now (and for the last few years) Hugo.

Making a series outline

I thought my first series of novellas would revolve around the same world, but otherwise stand alone from each other.

Pls

Like everyone else, I get quite a bit of recruiter mail. If the email seems more than just a templated message sent to hundreds of people, I usually try to respond and thank them for reaching out even if Iā€™m not interested.

The second book is harder

After a year of short stories, I released my first novella recently and it’s been doing pretty well. I’m surprised that it is still doing well, since usually books tend to drop off a cliff. But it’s still early days, and the cliff can come any time now.
