Reddit Winds Down RSS, Public API, and Old Reddit to Fight AI Bots

Reddit says it will end RSS feed support on November 13, shut down its public API by March 2027, and progressively lock down the classic 'Old Reddit' experience — first to logged-in users, and now, within the next few months, only to accounts that have used Old Reddit in the past six months (moderators are exempt) — all in response to large-scale scraping and automated abuse by AI bots. Together, these moves mark another retreat from the open web, cutting off researchers, third-party apps, social listening tools, and the simple feed readers that predate the AI scraping boom. Critics note the closures impact far more than bots: legitimate research, accessibility tools, and open-web interoperability all lose out — and for RSS users outside moderated communities, Reddit says there is no replacement. The platform says approved third-party apps and bots can register before January 12, 2027 to retain access, and it has blocked the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine from collecting its content. Reddit denies it is shutting Old Reddit down entirely, saying it is 'still working on the future of Old Reddit'.
